Feather vs Nylon Shuttlecocks: Which Should You Use?

Should your club use feather or nylon shuttlecocks? Feather shuttles fly and feel the best and are what tournaments use — but they are pricier and break quickly. Nylon shuttles last far longer and cost less, which makes them the sensible choice for regular club and social play on a budget.
Feather shuttles
Made from real goose or duck feathers, they have the crisp flight and satisfying "feel" serious players love, and they decelerate authentically for proper touch shots. The downsides: they are more expensive and a single hard session can go through several.
Nylon shuttles
A cork or synthetic base with a moulded plastic skirt. They survive far more hits, cost a fraction as much over a season, and modern ones fly reasonably well — ideal for practice, beginners and cost-conscious clubs.
How to decide
- Budget or casual club — nylon; your wallet will thank you.
- Serious or competitive play — feather for the true flight and feel.
- Many groups do both — nylon for weekly games, feather for matches and tournaments.
Split the shuttle bill fairly
However you buy them, shuttles add up. Badminton 360's free Split Pay divides shuttle and court costs equally across everyone who played — no more one person always footing the bill.
